Understanding the Reality of Uptime Guarantees
So, you’ve signed up for a new web hosting account and you are confident in its reliability because of the uptime guarantee that was posted on the sales page of the account by the highly trustworthy and reputable hosting provider. Unfortunately, most people don’t really understand the reality of uptime guarantees and what they mean. And uptime guarantee simply means that your web hosting server will be online for a specific amount of time per year or the web hosting provider will offer some form of compensation. The problem is, this compensation can vary greatly depending on the web hosting either and their terms and conditions for the plan that you have chosen. In most cases the compensation is simply a small discount, or a free month hosting. In other cases the compensation will vary depending on the severely of the downtime experienced and how upset you are as a customer. It is important to note that uptime guarantees are calculated on a yearly basis. For example, a 99% uptime guarantee means that the Web server is allowed to be off-line for 1% of the year. That means, according to the uptime guarantee the hosting provider is allowed to let your Web server go off-line for a total of three days per year without honoring their uptime guarantee compensation.
